An international collaboration with much water under the bridge limns as Duo Laroo/Byrd render selections from their 2011 release Collaboration: Two of a Kind–a Tribute to Monk and Miles. Trumpet player Saskia Laroo is a notable from Amsterdam, the Netherlands with a voracious international touring schedule and a luminous nickname: Lady Miles. Byrd has not only toured in some five continents as her sideman for ten years, but they’ve also toured together as duo in several countries. Laroo wields trumpet and bass vis a vis Warren’s keys and vocals.
Byrd’s work as co-founder of the Afro-Semitic Experience is one of his longest running associations–14 years and 8 CDs and perhaps his most consistently eclectic. Members of the Afro-Semitic Experience and he present a workshop performance called “Jazz Souls On Fire”: versions of selected spiritual and religious songs by jazz composers. This symposium will bear the largest and most distinct cast with Warren: Abu Carter on hand percussion, Alvin Carter, Jr. on drums, Stacy Phillips on Dobro, fiddle, and lap steel guitar, Will Bartlett on woodwinds, Saskia Laroo, appears again on trumpet and electronics, and co-founder David Chevan on bass.
Presently, Mr. Byrd is geared toward four new projects including an album project with the Afro-Semitic Experience, as one a sideman with Sinan Bakir and one with Maxine Martin as well as composing various chamber works. He seeks continual growth in music both internally and worldly.
